Fsum Frontend’s main purpose is to help you calculate the checksums, message digest, and HMAC of files and text strings. If a file is corrupted or missing, it notifies you about it. It also allows you to create a checksums file, put a checksum in the file name, verify a file containing a checksum in its name.

To get started with Fsum Frontend you will not have to go through a setup or installation procedure. What you will have to do is download a small archive (less than 1MB in size as a matter of fact), extract its contents, and then run the Fsum Frontend executable. The whole thing will take very little of your time, which is quite nice.

The panel in the upper left hand corner allows you to easily access the 'Options' menu, the 'Calculate hashes' function for files and text, the 'Verify checksum files' function, and the 'Generate checksum file' function. What you see in the panel in the upper right hand side depends on the function you select from the aforementioned panel in the upper left hand side. And down at the bottom there’s a Log panel that can be minimized out of sight.

As mentioned above, Fsum Frontend can be used to calculate hashes. To get a clearer idea of what can be done with the application, here’s a quick look at its main features: calculate hashes for files and text, support for more than 90 methods is provided, verify checksum files, generate checksum files, notifications for corrupted or missing files.

Fsum Frontend is a free application.

When an application works as advertised and is offered for the great price of free, there’s no reason to avoid it. So get Fsum Frontend if you need a nice tool to calculate hashes.

Pros

Fsum Frontend does not have to be installed; this makes it portable. More than 90 methods to calculate hashes are supported. Use Fsum Frontend to compute message digests, checksums, and HMACs for files and text strings. It's free and open source.

Cons

None that I could think of.
